Old Laws and New Technology: How Can We Keep Up? - David Hickton, Keynote Speaker; Kiersten Todt, Moderator

Old Laws and New Technology:  A Growing Crisis

The American Bar Association, New America Foundation, and Pitt Cyber host a discussion of the widening gap between coding and codes. Our legal framework is failing to keep pace with technology, whether with respect to securing consumers’ privacy, shaping future regulation to protect us from misuse of artificial intelligence, or to promote innovation, with a security mindset. How can government strike the balance between encouraging technological advancements and safeguarding citizens? The discussion will push on the potential for the future: Where are the current points of failure in our legal system? Where are the strengths? What responsibilities do technologists have? What should policymakers avoid in developing new regulatory efforts? What are the consequences if we fail?  How can policy catalyze innovation?

Keynote: David Hickton, founding director, Pitt Cyber and former US Attorney, Western District of Pennsylvania
